In November of 2023 & 2024, Sawyer Telford had the honor of serving as a member of Honor Crew at the Texas Thespian State Festival held in Grapevine, Texas. Being selected to this team required a submission of both written essays, video question responses, and a résumé evaluation, all peformed by a panel of anonymous judges. This opportunity was open to any person who attended the state festival, and was very competitive to be selected to. As a junior, Sawyer was selected largely because of his impressive résumé and essay proving his desire to better himself in theatre because of his goals to work professionally and eventually become an educator. He was then reselected in 2024 because of his outstanding work ethic demonstrated in the year prior. Honor Crew gave Sawyer the opportunity to work in conference style AV work for the first time in his career. It included a lot of speaker and projector setup and troubleshooting, as well as being available at anytime to assist presenters and guests when the need arose. He also had the opportuntity to work along industry professionals in lighting hang and focuses, as well as during the strike process. This opportunity gave Sawyer the chance to branch out of his comfort zone into new areas of tech, as well as to step into leadership positions, requiring initiative and an effort to always go above and beyond.
In May of 2024, Sawyer earned the opportunity to serve as a member of the University Interscholastic League One-Act Play State Contest Honor Crew. Sawyer went through an extensive application process that included an essay review and résumé evaluation. This opportunity was open to the entire state of Texas, and because of his impressive responses and résumé, he was one of only twenty applicants selected. This opportunity gave Sawyer the chance to serve at the state contest as a member of the host crew, and included running the fly system, helping with load-in and load-out for competing schools, helping with spiking and other stage related tasks, and many other duties. Additionally, it also gave Sawyer the opportunity to watch incredible theatre, and grow in many ways not only as a technician, but also as a future director. At the end of this opportunity, Sawyer was recognized as the Outstanding Honor Crew Technician due to his impressive work ethic and performance during the three day contest.
During his senior year, Sawyer served as the President of Marcus High School Troupe #4268 of the International Thespian Society. During his time as President, Sawyer acted as the overseer of all events and activities that went on within the troupe. He also led a large part of the planning process for these functions. Some of the most notable events that Sawyer helped lead and create included the 1st ever 24-Hour Play Festival hosted by Marcus High School. He also led the troupe to a new service-oriented design, focusing on serving the community both in and around the high school. This included events like face painting at festivals in the town, tabling at a large number of school and recruiting events, and becoming a lot more involved within the feeding middle schools in the district. This opportunity gave Sawyer the chance to work as a member of a team while leading it at the same time. It also helped him to improve in skills like time management, communication, and planning and coordinating of events and activities.
